The NREVSD Board of Education poses with February's Beth Webster Leading Lion award winners.

In January, Monroe Elementary joined millions of other schools across the world to participate in the Great Kindness Challenge.

This year, Monroe’s theme was ‘Kindness is our Superpower’ and they turned that theme into honoring superheroes in the Monroe community.

“The staff and students went out of their way,” Monroe Elementary Principal Dr. Jamie Kunz said. “We honored Deputy Vetter, our school resource officer, and we even made some special deliveries to the Monroe Township Fire Department.”

Local businesses also helped Monroe students spread messages of kindness throughout the community.

Pulling off all the events associated with Kindness Week is no small feat, and the first trio of Leading Lion award winners greatly aided in that effort.

Desiree Burdine, Emily Gibson and Natalie Goodman helped coordinate the event, allowing the students at Monroe Elementary to spread their message of kindness throughout the community.

“None of that would have been possible without [them],” Dr. Kunz said.

While Kindness Week only lasts five days, Dr. Kunz believes it’s important to continue that mindset throughout the year. As such, a trio of students who embody just that were also honored: Emma Fry, Malea Marcelo and Raelynn Wood.

“It’s not enough to be kind one week out of the year, so I wanted to recognize three young ladies who go above and beyond to be kind every day,” Dr. Kunz said. “Whether it’s to go out of their way to help a teacher, to collaborate with their classmate or just welcome a new student to their lunch table, I can always count on these three to be kind.”
